Some practice problems are musical. Others are problems that stop you doing the musical work at all. The task is vague. The difficulty is wrong. A missing prerequisite makes every attempt fail. You become bored, anxious, impatient, or convinced that the mistake says something permanent about your ability.

Robert Pirsig called obstacles like these gumption traps: setbacks and hang-ups that drain the enthusiasm required to continue a project.

The work is too large

“Learn the fretboard” is not a practice task. It is a category. Choose something you can complete and observe: name the natural notes on one string, find one interval from every root, or recall the notes between two frets without counting.

The difficulty is wrong

Work that is already automatic produces little change. Work that remains impossible produces noise and frustration. Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development describes the distance between what a learner can do independently and what becomes possible with guidance or collaboration.

For a musician, that support might be a slower tempo, a written prompt, a fingering, a demonstration, a restricted range, or a teacher. Choose a task you can do correctly with one useful support, then remove the support gradually.

You are protecting your ego

It is tempting to play the version that already sounds good. Real practice repeatedly shows you the boundary of your current ability. Treat the mistake as information. Make the task smaller, identify the missing piece, and continue.

You have lost sight of the point

Repetition without attention becomes empty. Return to the sound and the musical reason for the exercise. If you cannot explain what the task is changing, stop and choose a clearer task.

The goal is not to prove that you can endure bad practice. The goal is to remove what prevents good practice from continuing.

Keep the next step obvious

End each session by recording what changed, what still failed, and the smallest useful thing to attempt next. Momentum is easier to preserve when tomorrow’s first action has already been decided.
